PPTP vs OpenVPN Protocol

Different VPNs use different protocols. Protocols are simply the procedures by which data is encrypted and carried across a network. There are different protocols on offer though, each with their own pros and cons. Today we’ll be lowing at two protocols in particular: the Point-To-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and the OpenVPN Protocol.

PPTP

PPTP is simple in a number of ways. Firstly, it’s easy to set up. But moreover, once you have it up and running, it’s also very easy to maintain. What’s more, it works across most platforms and is available on nearly all devices, so this is a protocol for nearly everyone. The problem is that some users have reported its being blocked, and depending on which network its running on, it may be more or less stable. What’s the final verdict then? This is a fairly hassle free VPN for beginners, and a good choice if you value user-friendliness over stable connections.

OpenVPN Protocol

The OpenVPN protocol originates from OpenVPN, an open source piece of software available for download. This is its custom protocol, but it actually runs on many other VPNs as well. Essentially a combination of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols, this protocol is both secure and fast. As such, it can bypass many internet barriers, allowing you to access social media and other sites that may be normally blocked to you. The downside is that in order to make the most of these benefits, you need to be able to configure the protocol, meaning that you need to know a little bit more about technology than if you’re just running something like PPTP.

Both of these protocols have upsides and downsides then. Personally, I’d recommend checking out Hidemyass (you can do so by clicking on the link below). It’s a great VPN which is available from the low, low price os just $6.55 a month, and it offers both of these protocols and many others as well. What’s more, it has a great support network, meaning you’ll find it easy to set up and use whatever protocol it is you choose.
